Plan your Long Island wine country trip

A good Long Island itinerary is mostly subtraction. These are worked plans — a fork, a cluster, two or three tasting rooms, a real meal, and a route that does not put you back in the car more than it has to.

How to choose one

Match the itinerary to three constraints before anything else: how long you have, which fork you are on, and whether anyone in the group has to drive. A one-day trip from the city is a different plan from a two-night stay in Greenport, and the Hamptons plans assume you are already on the South Fork rather than crossing from the North Fork.

Then think about effort. A plan built around one cluster — Cutchogue and Peconic, say — gives you short hops and time to linger. A plan that reaches from Aquebogue to Orient looks impressive on paper and eats the afternoon in transit.

What each itinerary includes

Every plan here lists stops in order with rough timing, a specific place to eat rather than a vague suggestion, notes on what to book in advance, and a bad-weather alternative. Where a plan works better with a hired driver, it says so. Tasting fees and hours are not frozen into the plan; each stop links to the property so you can check the current details before you commit.

Building your own

Start where you are sleeping, pick the cluster closest to it, choose one producer you genuinely want to taste, then add a neighbour and lunch within a few miles. Book the first tasting and leave the last stop unbooked.
