Long Island Winery Map
The single most useful thing to understand about Long Island wine country is its geography. Almost every disappointing visit comes from the same mistake: booking tasting rooms that look close together on a list and turn out to be forty minutes apart.
The shape of the region
Long Island's East End splits into two forks separated by Peconic Bay. The North Fork is a narrow farm peninsula running roughly twenty-five miles from Riverhead to Orient Point, with the great majority of the region's producers on or just off Route 25 and Sound Avenue. The South Fork — the Hamptons — holds a much smaller number of producers, concentrated around Bridgehampton and Sagaponack. Shelter Island sits in between, reachable only by ferry from either fork.
The clusters worth planning around
- Aquebogue and Jamesport — the first wineries you reach coming east; a good opening or closing stop.
- Cutchogue and Peconic — the densest concentration on the island, and the best cluster for a day with minimal driving.
- Mattituck — a short hop from Cutchogue, with Love Lane for lunch.
- Southold and Greenport — the eastern end, best paired with dinner and a walkable evening.
- Bridgehampton and Sagaponack — the South Fork group, closer to Sag Harbor than to anything on the North Fork.
Driving realities
Distances are short and travel times are not. Route 25 and Sound Avenue are two-lane roads through farmland with traffic lights, farm-stand turns and, from September onward, pumpkin-season queues. Fifteen minutes between neighbouring tasting rooms is normal; the same trip on an October Saturday can take three times that. Crossing between the forks means either the Shelter Island ferries — two short crossings, frequent, occasionally backed up — or driving all the way around through Riverhead, which is an hour or more.
How to use the map
Pick one cluster, put your must-visit producer in it, then add one or two neighbours and a place to eat within the same few miles. Build the day outward from where you are sleeping. Wineries that appear on the map link through to their own pages here for varietals, tasting-room format and links to the producer's reservation page.
