Rosé season peaks and Cabernet Franc barrel samples surface

Sound-side patios are wide open, three new rosés hit tasting rooms this week, and the 2025 Cab Franc is finally showing itself from barrel on the North Fork.

What's in the glass

Three new North Fork rosés landed on tasting-room lists this week — all bone-dry, all Merlot-forward, and all priced under $28. My pick of the flight was the Wölffer Summer in a Bottle successor pour they were previewing behind the bar; ask a host if they'll open it for you.

On the red side, two winemakers cracked barrel samples of their 2025 Cabernet Franc for me this week. The wines are still tight but the mid-palate is already the plummy, savory shape you want. If a tasting room offers a barrel sample this month, say yes.

Where to go this weekend

Saturday: start at Bedell in Cutchogue for the rosé and a look at the harvest gear. Cross Sound Avenue to Lieb Cellars for sparkling and a bite from the food truck. Finish at McCall for Pinot Noir on the patio.

Sunday: skip the crowds and drive east. Paumanok in Aquebogue opens at noon; their Chenin Blanc is the wine to order. From there it's ten minutes to Shinn Estate for a lighter tasting and a bakery stop next door at North Fork Doughnut Company.

One event to book

Rosé, Rye & Oysters is back at Bedell Cellars on Saturday, July 5. Tickets sell out — I bought mine on release day. It's the best oyster-and-wine pairing on the East End every summer.
