American Beech

Sprawling Greenport restaurant, garden bar and boutique inn on Main Street — coastal New American plates and one of the village's best outdoor patios.

American Beech occupies a corner of Greenport's Main Street with a multi-room restaurant, garden cocktail bar, and four upstairs guest suites. Brunch is a local favourite, and the back patio under the namesake beech tree is one of the most relaxed outdoor dining rooms on the North Fork. Walk to Mitchell Park, the carousel and the Shelter Island ferry. Our go-to move: Sunday brunch at 11, always outside under the beech. I order the shrimp and grits with a mimosa built from Sparkling Pointe Brut; my partner does the smoked-salmon toast. The garden bar is a great low-key nightcap after dinner elsewhere on Front Street — you can drop in without a reservation up until about 9pm. Rooms upstairs are small but perfectly located if you want zero driving; ask for the front-facing suite. Skip on a rainy summer weekend — the patio is what makes it.

Part of a boutique hotel, not a standalone restaurant

American Beech's restaurant shares its address and phone number with a 13-room boutique hotel of the same name, set inside Stirling Square in the middle of Greenport village. Five of the guest rooms sit directly above the restaurant; the rest are scattered through the square. 3 The hotel has no elevator and only two floors, and the operator notes ambient noise from the square's bars and live music should be expected on summer weekends. 4

Three separate bars on site

Beyond the main restaurant, the property runs two additional bars — Black Llama Bar and Tree Bar — each with its own listing on the site's dining menu, alongside the restaurant proper. 1 That gives the square three distinct drinking rooms in addition to dinner service, which is part of why the block gets busy after dark even on off-season weekends.

Getting there without a car

The operator markets the location specifically as car-free-friendly: it's a fifteen-minute drive from the Orient Point ferry, a five-minute drive from the Shelter Island North Ferry, and a ten-minute walk from the Greenport LIRR station and Hampton Jitney stop. 3 Street parking is free but limited; the hotel recommends Bay Avenue, just off Main Street.
