Claudio's
Greenport's historic harbor-front restaurant — operating since 1870, with a sprawling deck, raw bar and Sunday-afternoon live music.
Claudio's claims the title of America's oldest same-family-operated restaurant (founded 1870). The main dining room, dockside Crabby Jerry's and the open-air Claudio's Waterfront span the entire end of Main Street wharf — the most touristy address in town, but unbeatable for a harbor-side raw bar at sunset. Honest take from a 40-year local: skip the formal indoor dining room and head straight for the outdoor Waterfront bar. We grab a high-top on the deck, order two dozen oysters and a bottle of Croteaux rosé, and watch the schooners come in. Sunday afternoons have live music that draws a fun bar-adjacent crowd. Bring cash for tips, expect a wait after 6pm in July and August, and if you're with a group of six-plus, call ahead — the deck fills fast and doesn't take same-day reservations for larger parties.

How old the building and business actually are
Manuel Claudio, a Portuguese whaler who arrived in Greenport in 1854, opened a saloon on Main Street after retiring in 1870 and later acquired the wharf-front property Claudio's occupies today; the building itself dates to roughly 1838–58 and has been on the National Historic Register since 1945. 1 The ornate mirrored bar inside was salvaged by Manuel from a New York Bowery hotel and installed in 1886. 1
A 2018 change of ownership
After 147 seasons under the Claudio family — recognized by the National Restaurant Association as the oldest same-family-run restaurant in the country — the property was sold outside the family in 2018. The new owners retained the Claudio's, Claudio's Clam Bar and Crabby Jerry's names. 3 So the current operation is no longer family-owned, even though the historic branding and building remain.
Current hours and setup
As of the restaurant's own site, hours run Monday 11:30am–6pm, Wednesday and Thursday 11:30am–6pm, Friday and Saturday 11:30am–8pm, Sunday 11:30am–6pm, with Tuesday closed. 2 The property today spans the main dining room, the dockside Crabby Jerry's, and the open-air Claudio's Waterfront, and can dock boats up to 120 feet at its marina slips. 2
