Modern Snack Bar
North Fork roadside institution since 1950 — Long Island duckling, homemade pies and great home cooking on Route 25 in Aquebogue.
A true Route 25 landmark, the Modern Snack Bar started as a short-order counter in 1950 and has grown into one of the most beloved family restaurants on the North Fork. The menu sticks to the classics — roast Long Island duckling, fresh flounder, the famous lobster salad, chicken pot pie and homemade pies. Operates seasonally, typically open Wednesday through Sunday from spring through mid-December.

Wine, beer and the counter classics
The wine list leans heavily on Long Island producers by the glass and bottle — Paumanok Riesling, Macari Sauvignon Blanc, Wölffer Cabernet Franc, McCall Pinot Noir and Lenz Merlot are all listed at $14 per glass / $45 per bottle. The dessert case includes whole fresh-baked pies to go, from $23 for apple to $25 for lemon meringue, alongside the counter's classic fountain items like the milkshake ($14) and root beer float ($13).
History
The restaurant traces to the early 1950s, when John and Wanda Wittmeier took over what had been a true short-order counter with six stools and a pass-through window. It has since grown into a full-service restaurant with two dining rooms seating 125 guests, and the site describes the current season as its 76th.
