Channing Daughters

Channing Daughters is one of the most experimental wineries in America — Bridgehampton's pioneer of Italian varieties and skin-contact whites.

Christopher Tracy and his team at Channing Daughters produce dozens of small-lot bottlings each vintage from grapes rarely planted on the East Coast — Tocai Friulano, Pinot Grigio, Refosco, Lagrein, Blaufränkisch, Dornfelder, Muscat Ottonel and more — alongside more familiar Chardonnay, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The Mosaico orange wine was one of the first commercial skin-contact whites made in the United States; the Variations series releases the same grape in multiple skin-contact and stainless treatments side-by-side so you can taste the technique in real time; and a rotating cast of vermouths, pét-nats, ramato Pinot Grigios and field blends round out a portfolio that's effectively impossible to taste twice the same way — there are routinely 30+ active bottlings at any moment. Founded in 1997 by sculptor Walter Channing in Bridgehampton, the winery sits inside a working sculpture garden; the tasting flights are seated, by reservation, and pour 5–6 wines with detailed notes. It's the philosophical anchor of the Hamptons scene and a must-visit for any drinker who thinks they've seen everything Long Island makes.

Mosaico, Ramato, Variations, Vermouth, Tocai Friulano

Channing Daughters is the single most important winery on the East End for understanding where Long Island wine is going. Skip the rosé tourism and book the Variations flight — comparing two skin-contact treatments of the same Tocai vintage will reset what you thought possible from this region.
