One Woman Wines & Vineyards

For Claudia Purita, sustainability and self-reliance have always been a way of life, starting from her upbringing on a family farm in Calabria, Italy.

Claudia Purita grew up on a family farm in Calabria, Italy, where sustainability and self-reliance were daily practice. After moving to Long Island and spending years in the restaurant industry, she planted One Woman in Southold in 2004 and built the winery almost entirely by hand — a rare distinction in an industry dominated by male winemakers and large crews. Much of the vineyard is still hand-tended by Claudia herself, and the focus is on small-lot, estate-grown Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, Grüner Veltliner (one of only a handful of plantings on Long Island), an aromatic Riesling, and a Bordeaux-style red. The casual tasting room — a converted farm building with a shaded patio and a converted school bus on the lawn — is dog-friendly, family-friendly, and one of the most personal experiences on the North Fork. Claudia is often pouring on weekends; ask her about the Calabrian heritage and she'll happily walk you through the field blend philosophy.

Grüner Veltliner, Gewürztraminer, Chardonnay, Riesling

One Woman is the most personal stop on the North Fork — there is no front-of-house team between you and the winemaker. The Grüner Veltliner is the bottle to taste; it shouldn't work on Long Island and yet it absolutely does.

Tasting room setting

One Woman's tasting room sits in a converted farm building in Southold with a shaded patio and a repurposed school bus parked on the lawn. The property is dog-friendly and family-friendly, and Claudia Purita pours on weekends herself.

The wines

The estate-grown lineup centers on small-lot whites — Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, an aromatic Riesling, and Grüner Veltliner, one of only a handful of Grüner plantings on Long Island — alongside a Bordeaux-style red.
