Wölffer Estate Vineyard
Wölffer Estate is the most recognizable winery in the Hamptons — famous worldwide for its Summer in a Bottle rosé.
Founded in 1988 by Christian Wölffer in Sagaponack, Wölffer Estate has done more than any other producer to put Hamptons wine on the international map — Summer in a Bottle is now poured at restaurants from Aspen to Saint-Tropez, and the label's Provence-style art bottle is one of the most recognizable in American wine. Behind the rosé phenomenon sits a serious estate: German-born winemaker Roman Roth, in the cellar since the early '90s, produces an excellent Estate Selection Chardonnay, age-worthy Estate Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the flagship Christian's Cuvée Bordeaux blend, the reserve Grandioso Rosé, a traditional-method sparkling rosé, and a small range of pommeau, cider and verjus from the estate's orchards. The Stables tasting room is the formal seated experience; the Wine Stand on Sagg Road is the open-air sunset hang every Hamptons summer makes time for. Reservations are essential through Labor Day.
Summer in a Bottle Rosé, Estate Selection Merlot, Christian's Cuvée, Grandioso
Summer in a Bottle is the gateway, but the Estate Selection Chardonnay is the wine I actually drink — flinty, restrained, far more Chablis than California. Book the Wine Stand before 5pm on a Friday or you won't get a seat.
The Tasting Room hours
Wölffer's Tasting Room is open year-round, seven days a week: Monday through Thursday noon to 7 p.m., Friday and Saturday 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Sunday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Reservations can be booked through the winery's Visit section. Wölffer Estate Tasting Room page
The Wine Stand
Separate from the Tasting Room, the open-air Wine Stand is open daily from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and is described by the winery as a casual gathering spot on a rise above the vineyard, with music and sunset views. Wölffer Estate Wine Stand page
